  4/20/2009 - HONEYWELL CREATES ISV PARTNER PROGRAM FOR SCANNING AND MOBILITY SOLUTIONS

Benefits and support offered for qualified independent software vendors

Blackwood, N.J., April 17, 2009 - Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today announced the launch of an independent software vendor (ISV) partner program to aid in the development and promotion of software operating in conjunction with the full line of Honeywell Scanning & Mobility (HSM) products. The new ISV program is designed to enhance the level of support provided to ISVs and to stimulate increased demand for software solutions.

“Honeywell’s goal in partnering with ISVs is to contribute to the creation of integrated solutions that better meet the needs of our customers,” said Mark Bunney, director of global alliances at Honeywell. “We created this program to form long-term strategic connections with ISVs and support them in areas that truly add value. We believe in investing in relationships with ISVs, and it’s these mutually beneficial relationships that will help drive success in key markets including retail, healthcare and transportation and logistics.”

The program has two main levels of participation designed to meet the specific needs of ISVs. Depending on the level of participation, ISVs will receive benefits such as technical support, discounted or free demo units, web-based or on-site training, and marketing materials and funding to drive increased visibility.

  4/7/2009 - HONEYWELL OFFERS NAURTECH CETERM® SOFTWARE FOR MAINFRAME AND WEB PAGE ACCESS ON MOBILE COMPUTERS

Leading terminal emulation and web browsing client now available for purchase directly from Honeywell

Skaneateles Falls, N.Y. – April 7, 2009 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today announced the availability of Naurtech’s CETerm® web browser and terminal emulation software for direct purchase from Honeywell. This pairing simplifies purchasing options for customers and provides a qualified solution for connecting to back-office mainframe systems and web applications. Tailored for retail and warehouse environments, CETerm® is available for Honeywell’s popular Dolphin® 7600, 7850, 7900, 9500, and 9900 mobile computers as well as the IK8560/70. The software can be factory-installed on the Dolphin® 7850 and 9900 for faster implementation and deployment.

Naurtech is an innovative market leader in handheld terminal emulation and web browser technology. The company’s CETerm® includes a web browser and terminal emulators specifically designed for data collection applications utilizing bar code terminals. Five concurrent sessions can be configured to connect to any web application or legacy host systems requiring 3270, 5250 or VT220 emulation.

New materials make the Dolphin® 9900hc resilient to liquids and solvents common in healthcare environments

Skaneateles Falls, N.Y. – April 3, 2009 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today announced the availability of the Dolphin 9900hc mobile computer with new disinfectant-ready housing, a first among leading rugged mobile solutions. The Dolphin 9900hc is specifically designed to mobilize patient safety in environments where continuous cleaning of the device is required. Leading-edge design reads 2D bar codes on mobile phone and PDA displays

Skaneateles Falls, N.Y. – February 17, 2009 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) and Gavitec AG - mobile digit, a leading provider of mobile ticketing technologies, today announced the availability of XELIA, an area-imaging solution that scans bar codes directly from mobile phone and PDA displays.

The alliance combines Honeywell’s Adaptus® Imaging Technology platform with Gavitec’s specialized software and purpose-designed hardware solutions to provide a product that delivers optimal reading performance of bar codes on digital displays. This technology serves a rapidly emerging market worldwide, as consumers purchase tickets or request product information and coupons online. Bar-coded data is then sent directly to their mobile phones or PDAs via SMS.

The process, known as mobile ticketing or m-ticketing, marks an important step in the digital evolution, as paper tickets and coupons are replaced with an electronic message sent directly to a mobile device. Consumer convenience and satisfaction increases as misplaced or stolen tickets become a thing of the past. By delivering improved efficiency and cost reduction, m-tickets and m-coupons are an attractive option for concerts, sporting events and entertainment complexes in addition to trains and other forms of public transportation.

Versatile area-imaging scanner delivers aggressive performance in a compact form

Blackwood, NJ – January 12, 2009 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today announced the availability of the MS4980 VuQuest, a compact yet powerful area-imaging scanner. The combination of aggressive presentation-mode scanning and advanced features allow for high-quality scanning in places where space is at a premium.  It’s ideal for applications requiring maximum versatility and strong performance.

Like Honeywell’s popular MS7580 Genesis™, the MS4980 is capable of scanning virtually all 1D, PDF and 2D bar codes. The MS4980 features a 1.2 megapixel camera that can be used to capture high-resolution images of important items including signatures, identification cards, damaged goods and personal checks. End users have the option of incorporating optical character recognition (OCR), eliminating the need for additional specialty hardware. A wide field of view allows the MS4980 to read wide bar codes and OCR fonts. These features make the scanner ideal for a broad range of applications—from retail point-of-sale to self-service kiosks to mobile ticketing systems where bar codes are read directly from the screen of a mobile device

“We’ve received feedback from customers requesting a compact scanner that can handle challenging imaging tasks,” said Taylor Smith, Senior Manager for Scanner Products Marketing, Honeywell Scanning & Mobility. Smith continued, “The MS4980 was designed specifically to address this need.”

Beyond small size and large performance, Honeywell’s TotalFreedom® development platform expands scanner functionality by allowing image processing, decoding and formatting plug-ins to be loaded directly to the MS4980 instead of the host system. TotalFreedom provides end users and third-party integrators with the tools necessary for developing plug-ins that meet the specific needs of any application. An intelligent multi-interface design delivers automatic cable detection and configuration, reducing overall system costs.

Because not all applications require the full range of scanning capabilities, the MS4980 is offered with Honeywell’s flexible licensing solution (FLS). FLS lets customers purchase the MS4980 with limited decoding capabilities. Decoding licenses can be purchased in the future, enabling additional symbologies to be read. “Honeywell’s flexible licensing solution future-proofs the MS4980,” said Smith. “Our flexible licensing solution allows customers to benefit from the functionality of the scanner today, while retaining the ability to increase functionality as their scanning needs evolve. FLS extends the value and the lifecycle of the MS4980, reducing the unit’s total cost of ownership.”

Area-imaging scanner integrates EAS technology to accelerate checkout transactions

Blackwood, N.J. – January 9, 2009 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today announced the availability of an enhanced MS7580 Genesis™ for retail applications. Retailers now have the option of purchasing MS7580 Genesis kits that support EAS deactivation. This enhancement merges the traditional two-step retail checkout experience into a speedy single-swipe solution.

The MS7580 Genesis works with the two most common architectures for EAS deactivation. Compatibility with Sensormatic EAS systems can be achieved by connecting the MS7580 Genesis to an acousto-magnetic (AM) deactivation controller and antenna. Retailers looking to connect to Checkpoint radio frequency (RF) EAS systems simply need to purchase the corresponding kit which includes an RF antenna built directly into the base of the scanner, along with the required communication cable. Interlock functionality provides added security by allowing the interaction between the scanner and the EAS deactivation controller to be programmed and timed.

The MS7580 Genesis can even capture digital images. Advanced motion tolerance means that even fast swipes of bar codes can be scanned, captured and processed. Deploying the MS7580 Genesis is easy and flexible with Honeywell’s TotalFreedom® architecture, which puts processing plug-ins onto the scanner itself for simplified configuration and faster transactions.

“Honeywell's Flexible Licensing Solution (FLS) allows customers to meet their specific scanning requirements by purchasing the MS7580 Genesis with limited decoding capabilities,” says Smith. “As customers’ scanning needs evolve, licenses can be purchased to enable additional decoding functionality, eliminating the need for new imaging equipment.”

Blackwood, NJ – December 23, 2008 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) and Datalogic announced today that they have reached an agreement that settles all pending disputes between their companies. The Honeywell companies involved in the settlement are Honeywell Scanning and Mobility, Metrologic Instruments, Hand Held Products, Omniplanar and their subsidiaries and affiliates.


The Datalogic companies involved in the settlement are Datalogic S.p.A., Datalogic Scanning, Datalogic Mobile, Datalogic Automation, and their subsidiaries and affiliates.


Since 2006, the companies have been engaged in a series of legal disputes. The agreement announced today ends all pending litigation.

The settlement agreement is confidential but includes a cross-license of specific rights, an agreement not to bring suit for a specified period of time, and a mechanism for resolving issues that may arise in the future.

Relationship with Scan Technology led to enhancement of EasyID™ software plug-in


Blackwood, NJ, December 15, 2008 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today announced that their recently launched EasyID software plug-in has been enhanced, enabling compatible area-imaging scanners to parse and decrypt bar code data found on North Carolina drivers’ licenses for applications involving age verification and automatic electronic form population. 

North Carolina is one of three states that utilizes encrypted PDF417 bar codes on their drivers’ licenses. Engineers from Honeywell and Scan Technology, a manufacturer and distributor of Auto-ID, data collection and point-of-sale products, collaborated to develop an enhanced plug-in that can process North Carolina’s encrypted drivers’ licenses. The plug-in was developed on Honeywell’s TotalFreedom™ platform. With TotalFreedom, end users and third-party integrators can develop plug-ins that can be embedded directly into select Honeywell imaging products, eliminating the need for time-consuming modifications to the host system. The intuitive nature of the TotalFreedom software development kit (SDK) allowed the EasyID plug-in to be modified in less than one week.

“Prior to the release of this enhanced software plug-in, retailers were unable to use the encrypted data contained within the PDF417 bar codes found on North Carolina drivers’ licenses. EasyID provides ready-to-use data to the host system, allowing retailers to perform age verification or automatic electronic form population with the single scan of a bar code,” says Taylor Smith, Senior Manager of Scanning Products Marketing for Honeywell Scanning & Mobility.

New long-range laser scanning in the latest Dolphin® 7850 Mobile Computer

Skaneateles Falls, NY – December 12, 2008 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today announced the latest release of its popular Dolphin 7850 Mobile Computer. Designed to be the ultimate scanning solution for in-premise mobile data collection, the Dolphin 7850 features a water, dust and shock resistant casing, power management, and now three new long-range laser scanning options that bring distant or hard-to-reach bar codes into user’s hands.

The 7850 is developed for high performance, high endurance, and easy ergonomic operation. Similar mobile computers on the market are typically larger, flat PDA-style devices retrofitted with an add-on grip handle underneath. In contrast, the compact and lightweight 7850 has an upward angled screen for convenient viewing and a comfortable integrated pistol grip that is easy to hold during extended shifts.   11/7/2008 - HONEYWELL FILES LAWSUIT AGAINST DATALOGIC

Complaint Filed to Protect Intellectual Property

MORRIS TOWNSHIP, NJ, Nov. 5, 2008 – Honeywell Scanning & Mobility, through its subsidiary Omniplanar, Inc., filed a lawsuit against Datalogic S.p.A and Datalogic Scanning, Inc. on October 22, 2008 in United States District Court for the District of New Jersey.  Honeywell’s claims against Datalogic relate to its Omniplanar’s SwiftDecoder Software and include copyright infringement; violation of Digital Millennium Copyright Act; breach of contract; misappropriation of trade secrets; and violation of N.J.S.A. 2A:38A-3 .   The complaint alleges that these violations may include all of Datalogic’s 2D imaging products including Gryphon, Power Scan, Lynx, Magellan, Kyman, JET and Matrix.  Honeywell is seeking monetary damages, injunctive relief, and impoundment of the violative software.

Designed for use in manufacturing, backroom retail, warehouse and distribution or other extreme industrial environments, the new 3820i Industrial Cordless Linear Imager is ready to use indoors or outdoors in a range of temperatures and operating conditions where less rugged barcode scanners won’t survive.

Based on the benefits of a proven product line, the 3820i builds on many of the reliable design and technology benefits of the 3800 — no moving parts, integrated Adaptus® Imaging Technology 5.0 and an optimized blend of ergonomics and durability.

Scanners and new point-of-sale software streamline age verification

BLACKWOOD, N.J., September 4, 2008 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today announced a new solution that takes the guesswork out of age verification. Industry-leading developer of point-of-sale systems, pcAmerica, recently introduced new software that integrates seamlessly with Honeywell’s EasyID™ software plug-in.

EasyID parses bar code data found on government-issued identification cards for applications involving age verification or automatic electronic form population. This plug-in eliminates the need for host system software to process the encoded information contained within 1D and 2D bar codes found on documents such as military issued identification cards, driver’s licenses and driver’s permits.

pcAmerica enhanced their Cash Register Express (CRE) and Restaurant Pro Express (RPE) products by incorporating age-verification functionality. CRE is a point-of-sale system designed for retail environments such as convenience, liquor and grocery stores. When an age-restricted product is scanned using an EasyID-enabled scanner, the software will prompt the cashier to scan the customer’s ID. The monitor will clearly display an ID ACCEPTED or ID REJECTED message, depending upon the customer’s date of birth. CRE prevents the sale of an age-restricted product to a purchaser with an ID REJECTED status, ensuring regulatory compliance.

RPE is ideal for entertainment venues. The system’s new ID Check mode allows operators to continuously scan identification cards. Similarly, the monitor will display a message indicating if the patron can legally purchase alcohol or be admitted to the venue.  

In addition to performing age verification, both of pcAmerica’s point-of-sale systems are capable of performing automatic electronic form population. With a single scan of a driver’s license, retailers and restaurateurs can use license data to quickly and accurately complete loyalty program applications.

This plug-in eliminates the need for host system software to process the encoded information contained within 1D and 2D barcodes found on documents such as military issued identification cards, driver’s licenses and driver’s permits.

EasyID is compatible with the following Metrologic imaging products: MS7580 Genesis™, MS1690 Focus®, MS1633 FocusBT®, MS1890 Focus®, the IS1650 and the IS4920.

A Metrologic imager enhanced with EasyID saves end users time and money by automatically populating electronic forms commonly found in a variety of industries, including retail, healthcare and financial services. “A single scan of a PDF bar code can eliminate roughly 45 seconds of manual data entry, reducing the length of an average transaction by 95%,” said Mark Schmidt, Metrologic’s vice president of marketing and product management. “Retailers can install EasyID to take the guesswork out of age verification, greatly reducing the likelihood of selling an age restricted product to an under age purchaser,” added Schmidt. EasyID can be pre-installed on select Metrologic imagers for out-of-the-box functionality. It can also be purchased as a standalone upgrade for scanners that have already been deployed in the field. After installing the plug-in, a short programming sequence allows the user to transmit up to 24 data fields in any desired order. The data fields can be separated by choosing one of the six available delimiters.

This plug-in is powered by Metrologic’s exclusive TotalFreedom open-system architecture.

This event took place in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on March 25–26, 2008. Law Enforcement Capture Data, Expect Substantial Efficiencies in Ticketing by Arming Officers with 2D Image Scanners 

Skaneateles Falls, NY – March 13, 2008 –  Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today announced that the Indiana State Judicial Technology and Automation Committee (JTAC) has developed an Electronic Citation and Warning System (eCWS) using the Honeywell Imaging and Mobility 4600r 2D Image Scanner as its primary scanning device.
 

Indiana State Law Enforcement Agencies are implementing a fully automated system for ticketing that is expected to extend through to all judicial branches. The new solution helps law enforcement agents improve efficiency by using the technology to scan the barcode on the back of a license, capture an image of the front of the license and scan the barcode on the vehicle’s registration. Currently, all warnings and citations are hand-written, then manually entered into the system.

The eCWS solution was designed with the help of officers and developed to meet specific on-the-job needs.  This end-to-end solution was designed to cut down on the overhead associated with hand-written citations and will ultimately link a number of government and law enforcement agencies together onto one system.

Using the scanning technology, ticket fields are automatically populated with license and registration information. The officers can then print and issue the ticket on site. The information is automatically entered into a central database that can be accessed by the courts, appropriate law enforcement, state and federal agencies. Minneapolis, MN, October 15, 2007 - Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today announced it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Hand Held Products Inc., a privately held Automatic Identification and Data Collection (AIDC) company based in Skaneateles Falls, N.Y., for approximately $390 million. Hand Held Products manufactures a range of data collection and communication products designed for mobile, on-site, and transaction processing in retail, healthcare, utilities, transportation, logistics and industry. The agreement is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory review.

Hand Held will become a part of Honeywell’s Security Group within the Automation and Control Solutions (ACS) business. Hand Held had sales of approximately $285 million in 2006.

Categories offer more personalized service to members.
 
 
Warrendale, Pa. – September 10, 2007 – AIM North America (NA) announced today the addition of new membership categories effective immediately. These new categories reflect of the growth and development of the industry and will allow the Association to offer more personalized services, education, and products to its members.

In the spring of this year, the AIM NA Membership Committee was tasked with developing a membership structure that better fit the needs of the membership versus the current single category. Thus began the testing of concepts with various segments of the membership—VARs, manufacturers, distributors, and consultants who were current, lapsed, or prospective members—for feedback.
 
"The decision to segment the categories of membership into more specific groupings are reflective of where our membership is today," said Donna Lee, chairwoman of AIM NA’s Membership Committee. "In order to evolve the Association, we must know who our members are, their level of engagement, and how to deliver relevant education, services, and products that will help grow their businesses."
 
The following new membership categories were approved by the AIM NA Board in August 2007 and are representative of organizations doing business in the automatic identification and data capture industries within the North American region. Dues are commensurate to their level of service and involvement. Current members will be automatically enrolled in the upper tier "Council" membership level in recognition of their AIM NA founding member status. Member delegates will be contacted this week to review these new opportunities.
 
VAR—This category is available to resellers, system integrators, or software developers. Three levels of engagement are available with dues ranging from $495 to $1,200 per year.
Manufacturer—Manufacturers can participate at two levels of engagement with dues ranging from $900 to $1,200 per year.
Distributor—This category is ideal for distributors and entails a flat dues structure of $1,200 per year.
Associate—This membership category is available to companies who do not manufacture products or provide solutions, but who have an interest in the industry. Associate members pay dues of $900 per year.

Hand Held Products® and Pharmitas Partner to Enable Compliance with the Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act

Skaneateles Falls, N.Y., and Bellevue, Wash. – Aug. 8, 2007 – There’s a growing epidemic concerning over-the-counter medicines containing the ingredients ephedrine, pseudoephedrine and phenylpropanolamine (PSE products), which are being used to produce the illegal drug methamphetamine.

The Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act of 2005 (CMEA) regulates the sale and purchase of select non-prescription PSE products, and requires retailers to log, track and report these PSE product transactions. Logbooks must be retained for two years.
 
Pharmitas, Inc., and Hand Held Products have partnered to offer solutions that enable retailers and pharmacists to comply with the CMEA by electronically capturing and managing PSE product transactions.

Many retailers are using paper-based logbooks to manually record consumers’ driver’s license information, purchase details and signatures. But a paper system creates challenges for everyone involved. It’s time-consuming for consumers, presents risks to retailers if logs are not secure and accurate, and is difficult and time-consuming for law enforcement to monitor and identify illegal activity. 

The Pharmitas Pharmacy Solution allows retailers to replace their manual paper-based logbooks with its electronic data capture and management system. The Solution is driven by proprietary software developed by Pharmitas that can be used with the Hand Held Products Image Kiosk™ 8570 or the Dolphin® 7900 Mobile Computer. 

“Through our partnership with Pharmitas, retailers can fully comply with the CMEA mandate while serving more consumers faster. Using either the mini-kiosk or mobile computer, retailers scan the 2D barcode or swipe the magnetic stripe on the consumers’ driver’s license to auto-populate their ID information into the log. Retailers then scan the PSE product’s UPC label, which automatically and instantly confirms if the consumer is within the legal purchase limit.

The consumer verifies the sale with an electronic signature, and the transaction information is sent and stored to a secure database and server.

Hussey, Director of Imaging Technology, was awarded the Richard R. Dilling Award by AIM Global, the association for Automatic Identification and Mobility, for his efforts in applying advanced AIDC technologies to the healthcare environment.
 
The Dilling Award, the highest award in the Automatic Identification and Data Capture industry, recognizes an individual’s outstanding contributions that have furthered industry growth through applications and technological developments.

A noted innovator and industry veteran of 15 years, Hussey has received 35 U.S. patents, many for pioneering work in the development of image scanning technology and 2D barcodes. He developed a PDF417 reader, the industry’s second such device, and his work in the area of fast Reed-Solomon decoding led to the lowest-cost 2D reader, setting the stage for broad adoption across various vertical markets.

As an active participant on the ANSI MH10 SC 8 and CEA R9 (formerly EIA) committees, Hussey helped define the industry’s first 2D barcode standards, which became the basis for application standards in material handling, electronics, automotive, telecommunications and the Department of Defense. More recently he has been a prominent leader in communicating and demonstrating the advantages of applying advanced AIDC technologies in healthcare.

Portable data terminals now offer required high-performance when reading any kind of ticket

Skaneateles Falls, N.Y. – November 14, 2006 – Hand Held Products, the global leader in image-based data collection solutions, and CASIO Europe, have teamed up to provide German Rail with a new imaging-based solution for processing e-tickets. German Rail, Europe’s largest railway, has implemented a new ticket and mobile ticket system using Casio’s IT-3000 mobile computer powered by Adaptus™ Imaging Technology 5.0.

Prior to deploying this new solution, German Rail conductors were forced to manually type in a 16-digit ticket number whenever a home-printed ticket (or e-ticket) was presented. Recently, the railway experienced exponential growth in e-ticketing, and currently processes over 50,000 e-tickets per day.

More than 12,000 CASIO IT-3000’s are being delivered via Systemtechnik, a German company that helped develop the product. The project was won after an EU-wide public tender. A result of close cooperation between CASIO Europe and Siemens VDO, the new IT-3000s will handle the mobile ticket sales as well as provide an easy way to read and validate train tickets. Systemtechnik’s built-in SmartCard technology enables the conductors to receive secure payment via credit cards, as well as quickly and easily read and validate the many different ticket varieties, including e-tickets, of its many thousands of daily passengers.

“We required a solution that enabled our conductors to sell and print tickets on the train, receive secure payments, and quickly read and validate train tickets with an Aztec barcode – home printed and at a later stage from an electronic display. This required not only an update to our existing hardware, but also an update to the technology behind the e-tickets we offer to our customers,” said Patrick Neehuis, project manager of ‘Mobile Terminal 2’ at German Rail.
