1/13/2010 - UPS AND HONEYWELL SET STAGE FOR NEXT HIGH-TECH HANDHELD FOR DRIVERS
Global Deployment of 5th Version Starts in 2011; Offers Continuous Connectivity & Industry-First Features FORT MILL, S.C., and ATLANTA, January 13, 2010 – UPS (NYSE:UPS) and Honeywell (NYSE:HON) today announced they are teaming on a new-generation handheld computer for UPS drivers that will further improve communications links while adding a number of other industry-leading features. UPS will deploy more than 100,000 Honeywell mobile computers worldwide. Known internally at UPS as the DIAD V (Delivery Information Acquisition Device V), the Honeywell mobile computer features innovative cellular technology that provides on-the-fly switching between cellular carriers, meaning the computer can automatically jump to another cellular carrier if the preferred carrier’s signal is lost. This industry-leading technology, when combined with Honeywell’s sophisticated 2D imaging capabilities, will further ensure the package tracking and reliability that customers expect from the world’s largest delivery company. At approximately half the size and weight of the DIAD IV, the new, more durable mobile computer will feature: • A state-of-the-art color display and microprocessor with substantially expanded memory – all to support driver training and future applications like navigation. For example, the DIAD V will enable maps to be displayed to help a driver avoid a traffic jam. • A color, auto-focus, flash camera to enhance proof-of-delivery and help resolve customer claims more quickly. • Faster Wi-Fi support (600 mbps) to enable larger and richer content downloads such as training videos to 90,000 drivers simultaneously. • An aggressive 2D imager that can decode many symbologies, including existing UPS linear barcodes and the UPS Maxicode, and thus speed the upload of additional package information at the time a package is first picked up. The 2D imager also will make it even easier to “capture” a clear view of a recipient’s signature. UPS will begin field testing the device in late 2010 with plans to begin a multi-year, global deployment in 2011. The DIAD V will be approved for operation in more than 100 countries. “Starting in 1991, UPS was the first in its industry to equip drivers with a handheld computer,” said David Barnes, UPS’s chief information officer. “Over the past two decades, the DIAD has become a critical component of an integrated global network that’s now tracking more than 15 million deliveries every day.” “Through each successive generation of the DIAD, UPS has leveraged technology to deliver superior service by accelerating the availability of customer tracking data, and by improving our ability to communicate about customer needs with UPS drivers,” Barnes continued. “I am confident the deployment of Honeywell’s computer as DIAD V will continue that successful trend.” “Honeywell is committed to providing technologies that our customers demand. By introducing the industry’s first wireless mobile computer that remains continuously connected to cellular service, regardless of the local carriers available, we are delivering on this commitment once again,” said Darius Adamczyk, president of Honeywell Scanning & Mobility. “UPS’ technical leadership and real-world application of advanced technologies is well recognized throughout the industry and Honeywell is excited to provide the platform for DIAD V,” Adamczyk added. “We view UPS’ selection as a tribute to our investment in mobility and the development of revolutionary wireless technologies.” Honeywell International (www.honeywell.com) is a Fortune 100 diversified technology and manufacturing leader, serving customers worldwide with aerospace products and services; control technologies for buildings, homes and industry; automotive products; turbochargers; and specialty materials. 1/11/2010 - CONSUMERS SHOW INTEREST IN MOBILE COUPONING FINDS HONEYWELL SURVEY
Progressive Retailers Should Invest in Mobile Marketing to Anticipate Consumer Demand
Fort Mill, S.C. – January 11, 2010 – Mobile couponing is still an early stage technology, yet the recent “Mobile Couponing Survey” commissioned by Honeywell (NYSE: HON) and conducted by Harris Interactive found nearly half (46 percent) of adults who own a mobile phone are at least somewhat likely to try receiving and redeeming bar-coded coupons via their mobile phones. Young adults (ages 18-34) make up the largest demographic interested in mobile couponing, with 66 percent at least somewhat likely to try the technology, suggesting mobile couponing is an emerging technology for the retail space, especially in young adults. The online survey, conducted December 15–17, 2009, polled 2,257 U.S. adults aged 18 years and older. Advancements in bar code scanning technology, such as the emergence of area-imaging scanners that can read bar codes off of mobile phone displays, are now making it possible for consumers to receive and redeem coupons on their mobile phones via email or SMS text message. Retailers scan the coupon directly from the digital display of the consumer’s mobile device at the point-of-sale, which eliminates the need to carry paper print outs and ultimately increases customer satisfaction. These advancements provide retailers with new opportunities to engage with their customer base in real-time, while saving costs and waste associated with paper coupons. “With consumer interest growing rapidly and mobile couponing becoming easy to implement, retailers will be wise to invest in mobile couponing early on,” said Dan Slavin, co-founder of CodeBroker, a leading provider of mobile digital loyalty solutions. “We are already seeing extremely positive results from our retail customers who have implemented mobile couponing and look forward to working with Honeywell to help additional retailers leverage these cutting-edge technologies to differentiate themselves from the competition.” Already, almost one-third (31 percent) of adults who own a mobile phone would be willing to share their phone number with retailers in order to receive mobile coupons, suggesting there is a real interest in the technology. Further, young adults (ages 18-34) are the most willing, with 50 percent stating they would share their number. “We’re pleased to announce these survey findings, as they are in line with Honeywell’s commitment to support the growth and adoption of innovative technologies in the retail industry,” said John Waldron, vice president of worldwide marketing, Honeywell Scanning & Mobility. “We understand mobile couponing is in the early stages of adoption in the marketplace; however, the initial interest from consumers, especially young adults, is promising. Retailers can utilize our area-imaging scanners, which are optimized for mobile couponing, as part of a comprehensive mobile marketing strategy to take advantage of this emerging trend.”
Additional findings of the survey include: • Mobile phones offer new way to reach consumers. Ninety percent of adults own a mobile phone, providing retailers with an additional outlet to connect with consumers. • Couponing still strong. Eighty-six percent of adults have redeemed traditional paper coupons from a newspaper or magazine and sixty-five percent have redeemed electronic coupons from the Internet or through email, indicating that couponing is still used by many consumers as a way to save money. • Consumers in all income brackets use coupons. Ninety percent of all adults (with incomes ranging from less than $35K to $75K+) have redeemed some type of coupon. Interestingly, the highest number of coupon users earn $50K and above, a key finding for retailers targeting consumers in higher income brackets. • Web sites important for mobile couponing. Fifty-seven percent of mobile phone owners willing to share their number with retailers to receive coupons would prefer to regularly log onto a mobile coupon web site in order to choose which coupons are sent to their mobile phone, a key takeaway for retailers looking to implement mobile couponing strategies.
Survey Methodology Harris Interactive® fielded the Mobile Couponing study within the United States on behalf of Honeywell from December 15–17, 2009 via its QuickQuerySM online omnibus service, interviewing a nationwide sample of 2,257 U.S. adults aged 18 years and older. This online survey is not based on a probability sample and therefore no estimate of theoretical sampling error can be calculated. 1/5/2010 - HONEYWELL INTRODUCES ENHANCEMENTS TO ITS STRATOS® 2400 PRODUCT LINE
Advancements Boost Productivity at the Point-of-Sale; Two New Models Increase Flexibility Fort Mill, S.C. – January 5, 2009 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today announced scan performance enhancements available on all Stratos 2400 five-sided, 360°-bioptic scanners. These enhancements enable cashiers to increase speed and precision when scanning GS1 DataBar™ and high density bar codes, both of which are becoming increasingly prevalent in today’s retail environment. Enhanced Stratos 2400 scanners allow cashiers to scan nearly all bar codes on the first pass and eliminate the need to hand-type hard-to-read bar codes or spend time searching for the bar code “sweet spot”—saving up to 14 seconds per product scanned. The new enhancements also help retailers prepare for the GS1 DataBar sunrise initiative. Another enhancement to the Stratos 2400 series is the addition of a solution to address weigh-shrink. A single or three-sided flip-up weigh bar can be added to Stratos 2400 scanners, enabling cashiers to capture the full weight of oversized produce along the length or width of the platter, ensuring accuracy in produce pricing. “Speed and accuracy are of utmost concern in today’s retail environment, and revenue lost due to the inaccurate weighing of produce is a top concern for retailers,” said Taylor Smith, director of product management—scanning, Honeywell Scanning & Mobility. “Honeywell’s new scanning enhancements drive a quicker, more accurate checkout process which results in increased store profitability and customer satisfaction—two of the most fundamental goals for all retailers.” All new Stratos 2400 scanners are capable of supporting Honeywell’s hand-held area-imaging scanners, which are becoming more prevalent as a secondary scanner at the point-of-sale, as well as Honeywell’s linear scanners. A secondary scanner eliminates the need for cashiers to lift large or bulky items, while an area-imaging scanner provides the added benefit of allowing cashiers to scan damaged 1D bar codes that can not be read with a bioptic scanner, as well as 2D bar codes used in emerging applications, such as age verification and mobile couponing. The introduction of two new Stratos 2400 models—a 20” (508 mm) scanner-only model and a 20” (508 mm) scanner/scale model—expands the breadth of the product line. With these new models, retailers can now deploy the Stratos 2400 series across multiple store formats with different scanner footprints, including 13.9” (353 mm) and 15.7” (399 mm). Deploying a single scanner platform reduces training costs for support staff, as well as service costs associated with maintaining spare parts pools. Combined, these cost reductions lower the total cost of ownership. “The new 20” Stratos 2400 scanners provide retailers with the ability to select the model that best fits each store’s needs,” said Smith. “With this option, retailers are able to implement a unified system that cuts operating costs and allows them to focus on their core business functions.” Honeywell’s Stratos 2400 will be on display at booth #1803 at the 99th Annual NRF Conference & EXPO from January 11–12, 2010 at the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York City, New York. The new extended length models will begin shipping immediately. 12/1/2009 - HONEYWELL AND SYDION ANNOUNCE SOLUTION FOR MOBILE H1N1 VACCINE ADMINISTRATION
Honeywell’s Dolphin® 9900 and Sydion’s emergency management technology provide efficient H1N1 vaccination Fort Mill, S.C. – December 1, 2009 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today announced that Sydion, LLC, a mobile crisis management technology company, is offering its’ patient-tracking software on Honeywell’s mobility platform to assist in the administration of the H1N1 vaccine. The system that Sydion is offering bundles Honeywell’s Dolphin® 9900 mobile computers into Sydion’s eMET®, an emergency patient tracking system, to deliver a complete offering that enables healthcare providers to effectively prepare for and manage mass H1N1 vaccine administration at locations such as hospitals, vaccination clinics or schools. Recently made available to the public, the H1N1 vaccine is in extremely high demand due to several outbreaks of the H1N1 flu, commonly known as the “swine flu.” The mobile tracking system offered by Sydion enables healthcare facilities and public health agencies to address the public need by offering a system to track, monitor and administer available vaccines either remotely or on-site. With eMET®, patients are provided with a bar-coded wrist band or other form of identification that includes vital information which is used to create an electronic medical record. The patient ID is entered into the eMET® central database, creating a way for medical personnel to track and prioritize all patients, based on individual needs. The system automatically transmits all patient data scanned or entered into the mobile computer to the patient’s record in the eMET® database, ensuring that physicians have up-to-date information and can follow up with the patient as needed. “With increased anticipation around H1N1 vaccination and ongoing outbreaks, it was imperative to find a solution that will allow us to safely and efficiently serve our patients,” said Linda McAndrew, RN and Administrative Director, Trauma Program and Emergency Preparedness, Scranton Community Medical Center. “Given our previous success using eMET®, we are confident that this technology will allow our personnel to effectively administer the H1N1 vaccine, while continuing our focus on providing top quality patient care.” “eMET® is designed with easy-to-learn technology so all medical staff can quickly adapt to the system, which is extremely vital in emergency situations,” said Nina Johnson, Managing Director, Sydion, LLC. “We chose Honeywell’s mobile computers because of their simplicity and durability, allowing medical administrators to stay connected in any type of environment and under most conditions.” The wireless technology and rugged design of Honeywell’s Dolphin mobile computers gives the units flexibility for use in environments such as schools, offices, and indoor or outdoor locations. With this mobility, healthy patients no longer need to sit in a waiting area with sick patients, as healthcare personnel are able to travel outside of their offices to administer the vaccine. This eliminates exposing healthy patients to the illness, and enables providers to effectively immunize patients while largely reducing transmission of the virus. For environments that may require a higher level of infection control, eMET® is available with Honeywell’s Dolphin 9900hc mobile computer. The Dolphin 9900hc is equipped with disinfectant-ready housing and is built to withstand frequent cleaning with harsh chemicals. This product allows for maximum cleanliness in any environment, helping to minimize the spread of germs from patient to patient. “With such a prominent healthcare concern rising around the world, Honeywell is pleased that Sydion selected its Dolphin 9900 mobile computer to be a part of their eMET® offering that allows healthcare facilities to manage the process of H1N1 vaccinations,” said John Waldron, Vice President of Worldwide Marketing, Honeywell Scanning & Mobility. “Through its relationship with Sydion, Honeywell is delivering on its commitment to provide devices that are being used to address the healthcare concerns of today by helping to ensure medical accuracy and increase patient safety.” All trademarks are the property of their respective owners. 7/28/2009 - HONEYWELL OFFERS SOFTWARE UPGRADE AND LONG-RANGE HARDWARE ENHANCEMENT FOR MOBILE COMPUTERS
Introduces Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.1 for Dolphin® 9900 Series; New Dolphin 9951 with Extended Laser Scanning Options Skaneateles Falls, N.Y. – July 28, 2009 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today announced two advancements in the Dolphin 9900 product line: the availability of Windows Mobile 6.1 for all models in the Dolphin 9900 series, and the new Dolphin 9951 mobile computer with support for long-range bar code scanning. These two enhancements provide users with advanced technology to accommodate their mobile computing requirements. Microsoft’s award-winning mobile operating system, Windows Mobile 6.1, is now available for all Dolphin 9900 models. Featuring a broad number of improvements for developers and customers, Windows Mobile 6.1 offers increased performance, advanced features and improved network security functions. “We are committed to providing our customers with the latest and most sophisticated system available,” said Garrison Gomez, Manager of Mobility Marketing for Honeywell Scanning & Mobility. “We’re offering a free upgrade for all qualified customers, allowing them to immediately realize the benefits of Windows Mobile 6.1.” “Windows Mobile 6.1 is a flexible platform for building and easily deploying mobile applications,” said Grace Ho, director of product management for the Mobile Communications Business, Microsoft Corp. “Customers using Honeywell’s Windows Mobile devices can take advantage of enhanced productivity in the field and connectivity to their most important information when they need it.” The second enhancement to the Dolphin product line is the release of the Dolphin 9951 mobile computer. The new device incorporates all of the proven features of the Dolphin 9950, with the addition of three long-range laser options—High Performance, Long Range and Advanced Long Range—to provide scanning functions from five up to 30 feet. Designed for scan-intensive application environments in retail or warehousing, the 9951 is ideal for situations where palettes or other coded inventory are located far away. “Customers can easily scan hard-to-reach bar codes at the top of a warehouse shelf or across the dock, rather than finding and using a forklift or ladder to get into range” says Gomez. “The ability to scan distant bar codes from the ground saves time and increases safety.” The rugged design of the 9951 includes the following features: • an ergonomic pistol grip to facilitate comfortable single-handed data collection that is easy to hold over extended shifts; • Shift-PLUS™ power management technology that ensures uninterrupted battery performance for 10 or more hours, eliminating the need to replace batteries during most work shifts; • three keypad configurations designed to match a variety of end user scenarios, including: o a 35-key numeric keypad with shifted alphabetical functions for basic retail use; o a 43-key alphabetical keypad with shifted numeric functions; o a 56-key full alphanumeric keypad for warehouse and distribution environments. 4/3/2009 - HONEYWELL RELEASES FIRST MOBILE COMPUTER WITH DISINFECTANT-READY HOUSING
New materials make the Dolphin® 9900hc resilient to liquids and solvents common in healthcare environments
Skaneateles Falls, N.Y. – April 3, 2009 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today announced the availability of the Dolphin 9900hc mobile computer with new disinfectant-ready housing, a first among leading rugged mobile solutions. The Dolphin 9900hc is specifically designed to mobilize patient safety in environments where continuous cleaning of the device is required. Facilities can reduce the risk of spreading pathogens by selecting a mobile computing solution for point-of-care applications that can be quickly and easily disinfected.
Solvents such as hand sanitizer, isopropyl alcohol, and ammonia- and bleach-based products that are used to kill pathogens also weaken normal plastics over time, creating cracks in the housing that can lead to scanning errors or equipment failure. Dolphin 9900hc increases return on investment by incorporating disinfectant-ready housing that resists the harmful effects of repeated exposure to harsh cleaning solvents.
“Traditional mobile solutions can experience cracked or broken cases that lead to down time in patient safety systems that are designed to reduce medical errors. Down time can be dangerous and costly to everyone in a healthcare environment, where cleanliness and safety are vital,” said Garrison Gomez, Manager of Mobility Marketing for Honeywell Scanning & Mobility. “The specially-designed Dolphin 9900hc ensures that the mobile computer will retain its case integrity for years, even after multiple cleanings around a non-stop 24-hour work cycle. With the Dolphin 9900hc’s disinfectant-ready housing, healthcare professionals can carry out the Five Rights of Patient Safety—the right patient, the right drug, the right dose, the right route and the right time—without concern of spreading pathogens or viruses.”
The Dolphin 9900hc retains all of the features and functions of the standard Dolphin 9900, including Adaptus® Imaging Technology. The computing architecture is powered by Microsoft Windows® Mobile 6 on an Intel® PXA 270 624 MHz processor with 256MB RAM x 1GB FLASH memory to ensure fast performance in data-intensive applications. An integrated 802.11b/g radio delivers wireless communication that supports advanced wireless security standards. The Dolphin 9900hc is Cisco CCX v4 certified and offers multi-mode wireless connectivity. The unit delivers full Shift-PLUS™ battery performance of over 10 hours, increasing end user productivity by eliminating the need to replace the battery during most extended work shifts.
“With millions of transactions for medications, equipment, and records management taking place at healthcare facilities each year, any reduction in risk can result in significant cost savings,” added Gomez. “Honeywell’s Dolphin 9900hc helps manage those risks and increases the effectiveness, speed, and quality of patient care.”

2/17/2009 - HONEYWELL TEAMS WITH GAVITEC ON AREA-IMAGING SOLUTION FOR MOBILE TICKETING
Leading-edge design reads 2D bar codes on mobile phone and PDA displays
Skaneateles Falls, N.Y. – February 17, 2009 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) and Gavitec AG - mobile digit, a leading provider of mobile ticketing technologies, today announced the availability of XELIA, an area-imaging solution that scans bar codes directly from mobile phone and PDA displays. The alliance combines Honeywell’s Adaptus® Imaging Technology platform with Gavitec’s specialized software and purpose-designed hardware solutions to provide a product that delivers optimal reading performance of bar codes on digital displays. This technology serves a rapidly emerging market worldwide, as consumers purchase tickets or request product information and coupons online. Bar-coded data is then sent directly to their mobile phones or PDAs via SMS. The process, known as mobile ticketing or m-ticketing, marks an important step in the digital evolution, as paper tickets and coupons are replaced with an electronic message sent directly to a mobile device. Consumer convenience and satisfaction increases as misplaced or stolen tickets become a thing of the past. By delivering improved efficiency and cost reduction, m-tickets and m-coupons are an attractive option for concerts, sporting events and entertainment complexes in addition to trains and other forms of public transportation. “Mobile technology and communications has become part of our everyday lifestyle, therefore m-ticketing is a natural evolution in this trend,” says Dr. Christian Steinborn, CEO, Gavitec AG - mobile digit. “The key to an effective m-ticketing or m-couponing program is deploying the right technology infrastructure. Honeywell’s Adaptus Imaging Technology platform is the ideal data collection technology to power our solution because of its aggressive read rates and ability to accurately decode poor quality bar codes. These features are critical in environments with lots of unknown variables that can affect how a bar code is displayed — the exact same conditions where mobile bar codes operate. Combined with our hardware and software design, we feel confident that Gavitec delivers a best-in-class solution.” Gavitec will produce and distribute XELIA, a bar code reader that incorporates Adaptus Imaging Technology to enable high-performance reading of 2D bar codes, including Data Matrix and Aztec codes, from electronic displays. As mobile ticketing gains momentum, 2D bar codes are the preferred type due to their small size and improved readability over basic linear bar codes. “We are excited to work with Gavitec on an innovative solution like XELIA,” says David Gantt, Global OEM Sales Leader, Honeywell Scanning & Mobility. “As the uses of bar code technology become more diversified and companies use bar codes in more creative ways, 2D bar codes and area-imaging technology are becoming the solution of choice for many applications – m-ticketing is a true example of this phenomenon.” Download PDF (18 kb) Honeywell International is a $35 billion diversified technology and manufacturing leader, serving customers worldwide with aerospace products and services; control technologies for buildings, homes and industry; automotive products; turbochargers; and specialty materials. 1/12/2009 - HONEYWELL’S MS4980 VUQUEST™ FITS ANYWHERE AND SCANS ANY BAR CODE
Versatile area-imaging scanner delivers aggressive performance in a compact form Blackwood, NJ – January 12, 2009 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today announced the availability of the MS4980 VuQuest, a compact yet powerful area-imaging scanner. The combination of aggressive presentation-mode scanning and advanced features allow for high-quality scanning in places where space is at a premium. It’s ideal for applications requiring maximum versatility and strong performance. Like Honeywell’s popular MS7580 Genesis™, the MS4980 is capable of scanning virtually all 1D, PDF and 2D bar codes. The MS4980 features a 1.2 megapixel camera that can be used to capture high-resolution images of important items including signatures, identification cards, damaged goods and personal checks. End users have the option of incorporating optical character recognition (OCR), eliminating the need for additional specialty hardware. A wide field of view allows the MS4980 to read wide bar codes and OCR fonts. These features make the scanner ideal for a broad range of applications—from retail point-of-sale to self-service kiosks to mobile ticketing systems where bar codes are read directly from the screen of a mobile device “We’ve received feedback from customers requesting a compact scanner that can handle challenging imaging tasks,” said Taylor Smith, Senior Manager for Scanner Products Marketing, Honeywell Scanning & Mobility. Smith continued, “The MS4980 was designed specifically to address this need.” Beyond small size and large performance, Honeywell’s TotalFreedom® development platform expands scanner functionality by allowing image processing, decoding and formatting plug-ins to be loaded directly to the MS4980 instead of the host system. TotalFreedom provides end users and third-party integrators with the tools necessary for developing plug-ins that meet the specific needs of any application. An intelligent multi-interface design delivers automatic cable detection and configuration, reducing overall system costs. Because not all applications require the full range of scanning capabilities, the MS4980 is offered with Honeywell’s flexible licensing solution (FLS). FLS lets customers purchase the MS4980 with limited decoding capabilities. Decoding licenses can be purchased in the future, enabling additional symbologies to be read. “Honeywell’s flexible licensing solution future-proofs the MS4980,” said Smith. “Our flexible licensing solution allows customers to benefit from the functionality of the scanner today, while retaining the ability to increase functionality as their scanning needs evolve. FLS extends the value and the lifecycle of the MS4980, reducing the unit’s total cost of ownership.”
Honeywell’s MS4980 will be unveiled in booth #2231 at the 98th Annual NRF Conference & EXPO. NRF will take place from January 11–14, 2009 at the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York City, New York. 1/9/2009 - HONEYWELL CUTS RETAIL SCANNING TIME WITH MS7580 GENESIS
Area-imaging scanner integrates EAS technology to accelerate checkout transactions Blackwood, N.J. – January 9, 2009 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today announced the availability of an enhanced MS7580 Genesis™ for retail applications. Retailers now have the option of purchasing MS7580 Genesis kits that support EAS deactivation. This enhancement merges the traditional two-step retail checkout experience into a speedy single-swipe solution. The MS7580 Genesis works with the two most common architectures for EAS deactivation. Compatibility with Sensormatic EAS systems can be achieved by connecting the MS7580 Genesis to an acousto-magnetic (AM) deactivation controller and antenna. Retailers looking to connect to Checkpoint radio frequency (RF) EAS systems simply need to purchase the corresponding kit which includes an RF antenna built directly into the base of the scanner, along with the required communication cable. Interlock functionality provides added security by allowing the interaction between the scanner and the EAS deactivation controller to be programmed and timed. “We know many of our retail customers have both scanning units and EAS deactivators at the point-of-sale,” said Taylor Smith, Senior Manager of Scanning Products Marketing for Honeywell Scanning & Mobility. “By bringing both of these functions together into one complete and simple unit, the two-step process is condensed to one. This allows employees to checkout customers faster, creating a positive customer experience.” The MS7580 Genesis has in its small form factor the technology to handle practically any scanning scenario. The unit can scan and interpret 1D and 2D bar codes, as well as a variety of OCR fonts. The MS7580 Genesis can even capture digital images. Advanced motion tolerance means that even fast swipes of bar codes can be scanned, captured and processed. Deploying the MS7580 Genesis is easy and flexible with Honeywell’s TotalFreedom® architecture, which puts processing plug-ins onto the scanner itself for simplified configuration and faster transactions. “Honeywell's Flexible Licensing Solution (FLS) allows customers to meet their specific scanning requirements by purchasing the MS7580 Genesis with limited decoding capabilities,” says Smith. “As customers’ scanning needs evolve, licenses can be purchased to enable additional decoding functionality, eliminating the need for new imaging equipment.” The MS7580 Genesis will be on display in booth #2231 at the 98th Annual NRF Conference & EXPO. NRF will take place from January 11–14, 2009 at the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York City, New York. 12/15/2008 - HONEYWELL’S AREA-IMAGING PRODUCTS NOW PROCESS ENCRYPTED NORTH CAROLINA DRIVERS’ LICENSES
Relationship with Scan Technology led to enhancement of EasyID™ software plug-in Blackwood, NJ, December 15, 2008 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today announced that their recently launched EasyID software plug-in has been enhanced, enabling compatible area-imaging scanners to parse and decrypt bar code data found on North Carolina drivers’ licenses for applications involving age verification and automatic electronic form population.
North Carolina is one of three states that utilizes encrypted PDF417 bar codes on their drivers’ licenses. Engineers from Honeywell and Scan Technology, a manufacturer and distributor of Auto-ID, data collection and point-of-sale products, collaborated to develop an enhanced plug-in that can process North Carolina’s encrypted drivers’ licenses. The plug-in was developed on Honeywell’s TotalFreedom™ platform. With TotalFreedom, end users and third-party integrators can develop plug-ins that can be embedded directly into select Honeywell imaging products, eliminating the need for time-consuming modifications to the host system. The intuitive nature of the TotalFreedom software development kit (SDK) allowed the EasyID plug-in to be modified in less than one week. “Prior to the release of this enhanced software plug-in, retailers were unable to use the encrypted data contained within the PDF417 bar codes found on North Carolina drivers’ licenses. EasyID provides ready-to-use data to the host system, allowing retailers to perform age verification or automatic electronic form population with the single scan of a bar code,” says Taylor Smith, Senior Manager of Scanning Products Marketing for Honeywell Scanning & Mobility. Paul Flowers, CEO of Scan Technology (STI), commented, “We are pleased to have played a role in the enhancement of Honeywell’s EasyID software plug-in. This value-added feature separates their area-imaging scanners from the competition. We look forward to offering EasyID as part of our product line." EasyID is compatible with the following Honeywell products: MS7580 Genesis™, MS1690 Focus®, MS1633 FocusBT®, MS1890 Focus, the IS1650 and the IS4920. The software plug-in can be pre-installed on select Honeywell area-imaging scanners for out-of-the-box functionality. It can also be purchased as a standalone upgrade for scanners that have already been deployed in the field. 9/29/2008 - HONEYWELL INTRODUCES A WIRELESS SCANNING WORKHORSE FOR DEMANDING INDUSTRIAL ENVIRONMENTS
Dirt, Moisture and Noise Are No Match for Powerful Hand-Held Scanner with Tough and Rugged Chassis Skaneateles Falls, NY – Sept. 25, 2008 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today announced its newest addition to the 3800 linear bar code scanner family to meet the needs of customers who require maximum durability from their bar code scanning solution. Designed for use in manufacturing, backroom retail, warehouse and distribution or other extreme industrial environments, the new 3820i Industrial Cordless Linear Imager is ready to use indoors or outdoors in a range of temperatures and operating conditions where less rugged barcode scanners won’t survive. Based on the benefits of a proven product line, the 3820i builds on many of the reliable design and technology benefits of the 3800 — no moving parts, integrated Adaptus® Imaging Technology 5.0 and an optimized blend of ergonomics and durability. Founded on performance and endurance, the 3820i is backed by a three-year warranty and has been tested to withstand fifty drops onto hard concrete from six-and-a-half feet (two meters), simulating standard industrial conditions. Independently IP54 certified, the 3820i is water and dust resistant, making it the ideal solution for any environment where dirt and moisture render other scanners unusable. The device withstands temperatures ranging from below freezing to extreme heat while still providing enough power to read bar codes that are dirty or damaged from intense environments. An adjustable good-read beep and highly-visible dual LEDs let workers know they’ve captured successful scans even where noisy conditions prevail. “To achieve the highest ROI possible, industrial enterprises require scanning solutions that are built specifically to fit their work environments,” said Melissa Fiutak, Manager of Product Marketing for Hand-Held Imagers, Honeywell Scanning & Mobility. “We’ve combined class-leading ergonomics and durability with innovative battery management and high-performance bar code scanning to deliver a solution that’s optimized for improving productivity in the harshest applications.” The 3820i can operate for long periods of time while still being ergonomic and easy to use. The battery works for 50,000 scans or over 16 hours, enough to work over two shifts before requiring a charge. For customers requiring even longer periods of service in situations where downtime is not an option, batteries can be easily swapped without any tools. Wireless communication is handled via Bluetooth v2.0, allowing a maximum range of 33 feet (10 meters) between the scanner and the base, and eliminating potentially dangerous cables from fast-paced work areas. Up to seven different 3820i units can connect to a single base, adding value and simplicity to installations that require multiple scanners. To prevent loss of information and wasted time, the scanner can keep up to 500 bar codes in memory for times when the unit is unable to transmit to the base. Once a connection is re-established, the 3820i will transmit the stored data. As an option, the 3820i is available with FIPS 140-2 encryption, meeting U.S. Government requirements for secure wireless data transmission and adding an enhanced level of security for any situation that handles sensitive information. 9/4/2008 - Honeywell Helps pcAmerica Prevent Underage Buyers From Getting Hands On Age-Restricted Products
Scanners and new point-of-sale software streamline age verification BLACKWOOD, N.J., September 4, 2008 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today announced a new solution that takes the guesswork out of age verification. Industry-leading developer of point-of-sale systems, pcAmerica, recently introduced new software that integrates seamlessly with Honeywell’s EasyID™ software plug-in. EasyID parses bar code data found on government-issued identification cards for applications involving age verification or automatic electronic form population. This plug-in eliminates the need for host system software to process the encoded information contained within 1D and 2D bar codes found on documents such as military issued identification cards, driver’s licenses and driver’s permits. pcAmerica enhanced their Cash Register Express (CRE) and Restaurant Pro Express (RPE) products by incorporating age-verification functionality. CRE is a point-of-sale system designed for retail environments such as convenience, liquor and grocery stores. When an age-restricted product is scanned using an EasyID-enabled scanner, the software will prompt the cashier to scan the customer’s ID. The monitor will clearly display an ID ACCEPTED or ID REJECTED message, depending upon the customer’s date of birth. CRE prevents the sale of an age-restricted product to a purchaser with an ID REJECTED status, ensuring regulatory compliance. RPE is ideal for entertainment venues. The system’s new ID Check mode allows operators to continuously scan identification cards. Similarly, the monitor will display a message indicating if the patron can legally purchase alcohol or be admitted to the venue. In addition to performing age verification, both of pcAmerica’s point-of-sale systems are capable of performing automatic electronic form population. With a single scan of a driver’s license, retailers and restaurateurs can use license data to quickly and accurately complete loyalty program applications. “I’m excited to offer our Cash Register Express and Restaurant Pro Express point-of-sale software packages with Honeywell’s innovative EasyID technology. I am confident that Metrologic, now part of Honeywell, will continue to deliver advanced solutions that allow pcAmerica to offer cutting-edge point-of-sale systems to our clients,” says David Gosman, chief executive officer of pcAmerica. Darius Adamczyk, president of Honeywell Imaging and Mobility, added, “We are proud that our relationship with pcAmerica has resulted in the development of a complete age-verification solution. We invite our customers to experience the intuitive age-verification process that this complete solution delivers.” pcAmerica’s CRE and RPE point-of-sale systems with age verification functionality are currently compatible with Honeywell’s MS7580 Genesis™ and MS1690 Focus®. The entire system, including the customer’s choice of EasyID-enabled Genesis or Focus scanners, can be purchased directly through pcAmerica. For more information, call (800) 722-6374 or visit http://www.pcamerica.com. CRE and RPE can also be purchased through one of pcAmerica’s value added-resellers. Honeywell International is a $38 billion diversified technology and manufacturing leader, serving customers worldwide with aerospace products and services; control technologies for buildings, homes and industry; automotive products; turbochargers; and specialty materials. Based in Morris Township, N.J., Honeywell's shares are traded on the New York, London and Chicago Stock Exchanges. 4/21/2008 - HONEYWELL LEADING TREND TO MEET FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SECURITY REQUIREMENTS FOR WIRELESS APPLICATIONS
Honeywell Cordless Barcode Scanners among First to Offer FIPS 140-2 Certified Encryption for Enhanced IT Security
Skaneateles Falls, NY – April 21, 2008 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today announced its line of cordless handheld image scanners are now independently certified to meet the FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standard) 140-2 security level required by U.S. government departments. Honeywell is one of the first automatic identification and data capture (AIDC) manufacturers to deliver FIPS-certified cordless handheld barcode scanners.
Honeywell’s three main cordless scanners—the 3820 Cordless Linear Image Scanner, 4820 Cordless 2D Image Scanner and 4820i Industrial 2D Cordless Image Scanner—are now available with the option of a FIPS-validated security module.
Government specialist The Culver Group has relied on Honeywell cordless scanners for several years to provide the Department of Veteran’s Affairs (VA) healthcare facilities with reliable, high-performance data collection technology.
“We needed a manufacturer to take the initiative and implement FIPS into a cordless scanner, which is exactly what Honeywell did, enabling us to help the VA continue its IT security initiative and preserve the privacy of their patients,” said Brian Czawlytko, Government Sales Manager at The Culver Group.
FIPS 140-2 validation ensures that a specific security technology has passed rigorous testing under the CAVP (Cryptographic Algorithm Validation Program) and CMVP (Cryptographic Module Validation Program) by an accredited third-party laboratory, and can be used to secure sensitive information. FIPS encryption, while presently required only by the U.S. government, is valuable to any business or organization where data is transmitted wirelessly and there is a need for enhanced security.
“While required solely by the U.S. federal government at this point, we see great value in the ability to provide enhanced security capabilities to all of our customers, even if it’s not a mandate in their industry,” said Don Flynn, VP and GM of Image Scanning, Honeywell Imaging and Mobility. “FIPS certification enables us to deliver an overall more robust solution to the market.” For more information on Honeywell Imaging and Mobility, visit www.honeywell.com/aidc or call 1-800-582-4263.

4/8/2008 - Metrologic and Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center Sponsored Healthcare Educational Forum
Interactive Event Deemed a Success by Attendees Blackwood, New Jersey – April 8, 2008 -- Metrologic Instruments recently held their first Healthcare Educational Forum in conjunction with Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center (WFUBMC). This event took place in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on March 25–26, 2008. More than 45 representatives from hospitals, integrated delivery networks and healthcare information systems across the United States participated in the forum.
The partnership between Metrologic and Wake Forest began in 2006 when Metrologic developed a bar code scanning solution for WFUBMC. WFUBMC currently has approximately 825 MS1633 FocusBT® scanners installed throughout the hospital, including in the pharmacy. Wireless FocusBT scanners were installed in patient rooms to assist healthcare professionals with bedside medication verification by scanning the 1D and 2D bar codes found on medications and patient wristbands. “The resulting partnership has led to marked improvements in the execution of the five rights patient safety initiative, as well as productivity in the pharmacy at Wake Forest,” commented David Breeze, Technology Systems Coordinator. “The idea of jointly hosting an educational event occurred naturally as a result of our close affiliation,” remarked Peter Witonsky, Metrologic’s Director of Business Development.
The two-day forum afforded attendees the opportunity to learn about bar code scanning, bedside and pharmacy workflow, pharmaceutical parsing requirements, communication protocols and recommendations for pre-implementation and ongoing training. Diana Contino, Senior Manager of Global Healthcare at Bearing Point, a leading management and technology consulting company, led an informative session on patient flow. Attendees also participated in a guided tour of the WFUBMC. Most notably, the forum featured a question and answer session with a panel of individuals that were personally involved in the implementation of bar code scanners at Wake Forest. During this session, the President of EnovateIT, Ron Sgro, shared his knowledge regarding mobile computerized systems integration.
Representatives from Wellmont Health System were pleased to be in attendance. Bill Heidelberg stated, “The Healthcare Educational Forum provided me with in-depth knowledge on a variety of issues related to bar code scanning in healthcare environments. I was especially impressed with the quality of the presenters, as well as the diversity of perspectives.”
“Metrologic considers the sponsorship of events such as the Healthcare Educational Forum to be an important step towards increasing our presence in the healthcare community. We look forward to sharing our expertise with healthcare professionals to develop unique bar code scanning solutions,” added Witonsky.

3/13/2008 - HONEYWELL IMAGING TECHNOLOGY AUTOMATES & IMPROVES INDIANA’S LAW ENFORCEMENT TICKETING PROCESS
Law Enforcement Capture Data, Expect Substantial Efficiencies in Ticketing by Arming Officers with 2D Image Scanners Skaneateles Falls, NY – March 13, 2008 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today announced that the Indiana State Judicial Technology and Automation Committee (JTAC) has developed an Electronic Citation and Warning System (eCWS) using the Honeywell Imaging and Mobility 4600r 2D Image Scanner as its primary scanning device. Indiana State Law Enforcement Agencies are implementing a fully automated system for ticketing that is expected to extend through to all judicial branches. The new solution helps law enforcement agents improve efficiency by using the technology to scan the barcode on the back of a license, capture an image of the front of the license and scan the barcode on the vehicle’s registration. Currently, all warnings and citations are hand-written, then manually entered into the system. The eCWS solution was designed with the help of officers and developed to meet specific on-the-job needs. This end-to-end solution was designed to cut down on the overhead associated with hand-written citations and will ultimately link a number of government and law enforcement agencies together onto one system. Using the scanning technology, ticket fields are automatically populated with license and registration information. The officers can then print and issue the ticket on site. The information is automatically entered into a central database that can be accessed by the courts, appropriate law enforcement, state and federal agencies. The offenses and appropriate court information are automatically printed on the ticket; eliminating manual data entry, reducing administrative work and ensuring timely and accurate information. Indiana law enforcement agencies will purchase the 4600r scanners from Data Ltd, an Indiana-based mobile technology company, which will handle all device staging, service, and support. “The durability of the 4600r is a perfect fit for the JTAC agencies,” stated Chris Havens, a government sales specialist with Data Ltd. “The versatility of this device offers the agencies exactly what they need when they are on the job. Powered by Adaptus® Imaging Technology, the scanner can read barcodes quickly from any angle and capture a full image of the driver’s license, which is especially helpful for out-of-state licenses.” “We’ve heard from officers who have tested this solution that they’ve cut in half the time typically needed to issue a citation,” said Havens. “The average stop-time dropped from ten to five minutes. This is significant because it reduces the risk and time associated with sitting on the side of the road writing up the ticket. It also decreases the time that law enforcement agents spend on paperwork; allowing them more time to patrol and keep communities safe.” Honeywell International is a $36 billion diversified technology and manufacturing leader, serving customers worldwide with aerospace products and services; control technologies for buildings, homes and industry; automotive products; turbochargers; and specialty materials. Unique Solution Eliminates Moving Parts to Increase Device Reliability and Decrease Maintenance While Still Delivering High-Quality Document Imaging
Skaneateles Falls, NY – Feb 25, 2008 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today announced the new 4800dr Document Reader, designed to digitize hard-copy documents for paperless processing, storage and retrieval. The 4800dr is available for sale globally. An alternative to page scanners, the 4800dr is optimized for applications that require documents to be imaged at the point of entering a workflow. 1/11/2008 - Metrologic Releases SP5700 OptimusPDA™ Worldwide
Company's First Microsoft® Windows®-Based Mobile Computer Blackwood, New Jersey – January 11, 2008 -- Metrologic Instruments, Inc. announced today the worldwide release of its SP5700 OptimusPDA mobile device which incorporates a Microsoft Windows-based platform, bar code scanning and advanced wireless technologies into a lightweight and durable device. Metrologic initially released the device in Europe in March 2007 and a few months later in Asia.
By supporting access to wireless standards (Bluetooth and WiFi 802.11 b and g) with faster download speeds and higher bandwidth, the OptimusPDA provides a versatile solution for increasing productivity and responsiveness in mobile applications associated with retail and supply chain, field service, health care, parcel delivery, and transportation. WiFi-Protected Access security measures engineered directly into the mobile computer’s firmware ensures information remains confidential. “The OptimusPDA signifies Metrologic’s entry into the Windows-based mobile computing marketplace,” said Mark Schmidt, Metrologic’s vice president of product management and marketing. “For mobile workers responsible for collecting data in the field, the OptimusPDA eliminates the added expense and aggravation of having to purchase and carry around separate devices like a mobile phone, a PDA, a bar code scanner and a digital camera.”
Lighter than most mobile computers, but just as powerful, the OptimusPDA can be equipped with a variety of options, including a choice of either a Metrologic laser or high-resolution imaging scan engine, data-transfer options (USB & RS232), and a two-mega-pixel camera. Metrologic further lowers the total cost of ownership by packaging the OptimusPDA in all-inclusive kits which include the essential accessories necessary for operation right out of the box.
Metrologic also provides users with a software development kit (SDK) for creating custom software applications on Microsoft’s proven Windows CE 5.0 platform.
This IP54-rated mobile computer resists exposure to dust, splashing water and extreme temperatures. The OptimusPDA is also tough enough to withstand repeated 1.5-meter falls onto concrete.
Metrologic will feature the OptimusPDA at the National Retail Federation’s (NRF) upcoming 97th Annual Convention and Expo held at the Javits Center (Booth #1345) in New York January 14-15, 2008. For more information, please visit www.metrologic.com/SP5700.

Maxway, Roses deploying the Dolphin® 7600 for in-store data collection
Skaneateles Falls, N.Y. – Dec. 12, 2007 – Hand Held Products, Inc., a global leader in image-based data collection solutions for mobile applications, and systems integrator Integrated Solutions International announce that Variety Wholesalers will install 350 units of the Hand Held Products Dolphin® 7600 Mobile Computer in two of their store chains for in-store data collection applications.
Headquartered in Henderson, N.C., Variety Wholesalers operates approximately 500 retail stores, including the Maxway, Roses, Bargain Town and Super Dollar chains, in the Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic United States. Maxway and Roses will begin installing the 7600s in their stores starting in January.
The devices will be equipped with a data collection application written with ITScriptNet®, Z-Space Technologies, Inc.’s program development software. It will enable the retailers to validate user input, look up information against a 150,000-item file stored on the Dolphin 7600, place shelf replenishment orders, and transfer the collected data via batch mode to the central office, where it will seamlessly integrate with the back-end system.
“In addition to the ability to easily perform data collection applications, the 7600s with ITScriptNet will also enable the customer to cost-effectively add different applications over time,” said Mike Sweeney, President, Integrated Solutions. “We’re confident that Variety Wholesalers will see improvements in productivity at Maxway and Roses, and will eventually implement the 7600 across all of its stores.”
“Variety Wholesalers needed a rugged device with an integrated scanner that’s lightweight and easy to handle—the Dolphin 7600 will be the perfect solution for them,” said Garrison Gomez, Vice President and General Manager of Mobility Systems, Hand Held Products. “Our mobile computer will be a dramatic improvement for the retailers, as they were previously using a large, heavy device with a tethered scanner. They’ll now have the ability to scan and share data quickly and with ease.” Currently, Integrated Solutions and Z-Space Technologies are working together on application development and will pilot 10 devices in the stores before implementation begins.
With a compact and cost-effective design, the Dolphin 7600 offers workers comfortable, one-handed use. Featuring Adaptus® Imaging Technology 5.0, the 7600 can read any linear or 2D barcode and capture digital images. Advanced Full-Shift Power Management enables the 7600 to endure barcode reading and batch applications for an entire work-shift, delivering uninterrupted data processing and enhanced worker productivity while significantly reducing battery replacement costs. The 7600 combines the versatility of 802.11b/g and Bluetooth® wireless communication.

12/11/2007 - AIM NA Announces the Formation of UID Suppliers Alliance Committee
Warrendale, Pa. – December 11, 2007 –AIM North America (NA) has formed the UID Suppliers Alliance (USA) Committee to provide UID vendors with a forum to discuss issues, and develop and implement projects that will help accelerate UID implementation. AIM Global has worked with its members and AIM NA leadership in launching the new committee. Item Unique Identification (IUID) is a mandated landmark policy by the Department of Defense (DoD) requiring all assets and property owned by the DoD, including assets in the possession of contractors and legacy items at military installations, to be marked with a unique serialized identification number and then registered with the IUID Registry in accordance with MIL STD 130. The UID Policy is designed to help the defense community to: achieve lower life-cycle cost of item management; provide item visibility regardless of platform or "owner"; supply item data necessary for top-level logistics and engineering analysis; provide an accurate source for property and equipment valuation/accountability; improve access to historical data for use during systems design and throughout the life of an item; provide better item intelligence for the warfighter for operational planning; and reduce workforce burden through increased productivity and efficiency. “The purpose of the UID Supplier Alliance (USA) Committee is to increase access to senior DoD leadership, thereby driving the adoption of UID from the top down. In the process we intend to educate the military and their contractors about the enormous business benefits of implementing UID across the military and throughout enterprises,” stated UID Committee Interim Chairperson, Peter Collins, President, A2B Tracking Solutions. The USA Committee is being chartered with three main goals: Develop a clear, consistent message on all aspects of UID requirements; communicate and educate influential government leaders about the benefits of UID compliance; and establish a plan for success. “Combining the resources of our members and creating a unified message and communication infrastructure will strengthen our voice about the benefits of UID compliance,” said A. Tee Migliori, President, AIM North America. Participation in the USA Committee requires membership in AIM Global or AIM North America and minimal additional contribution. For information about the USA Committee, contact the AIM North America office at +1 724.934.5688 or info@aim-na.org.

9/10/2007 - AIM North America Adopts New Membership Categories
Categories offer more personalized service to members. Warrendale, Pa. – September 10, 2007 – AIM North America (NA) announced today the addition of new membership categories effective immediately. These new categories reflect of the growth and development of the industry and will allow the Association to offer more personalized services, education, and products to its members.
In the spring of this year, the AIM NA Membership Committee was tasked with developing a membership structure that better fit the needs of the membership versus the current single category. Thus began the testing of concepts with various segments of the membership—VARs, manufacturers, distributors, and consultants who were current, lapsed, or prospective members—for feedback. "The decision to segment the categories of membership into more specific groupings are reflective of where our membership is today," said Donna Lee, chairwoman of AIM NA’s Membership Committee. "In order to evolve the Association, we must know who our members are, their level of engagement, and how to deliver relevant education, services, and products that will help grow their businesses." The following new membership categories were approved by the AIM NA Board in August 2007 and are representative of organizations doing business in the automatic identification and data capture industries within the North American region. Dues are commensurate to their level of service and involvement. Current members will be automatically enrolled in the upper tier "Council" membership level in recognition of their AIM NA founding member status. Member delegates will be contacted this week to review these new opportunities. VAR—This category is available to resellers, system integrators, or software developers. Three levels of engagement are available with dues ranging from $495 to $1,200 per year. Manufacturer—Manufacturers can participate at two levels of engagement with dues ranging from $900 to $1,200 per year. Distributor—This category is ideal for distributors and entails a flat dues structure of $1,200 per year. Associate—This membership category is available to companies who do not manufacture products or provide solutions, but who have an interest in the industry. Associate members pay dues of $900 per year. "Our new membership categories are designed to provide organizations of all types and sizes the opportunity to get involved," said A. Tee Migliori, president of AIM North America. 8/8/2007 - Hand Held Products Partners with Pharmitas
Hand Held Products® and Pharmitas Partner to Enable Compliance with the Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act Skaneateles Falls, N.Y., and Bellevue, Wash. – Aug. 8, 2007 – There’s a growing epidemic concerning over-the-counter medicines containing the ingredients ephedrine, pseudoephedrine and phenylpropanolamine (PSE products), which are being used to produce the illegal drug methamphetamine. The Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act of 2005 (CMEA) regulates the sale and purchase of select non-prescription PSE products, and requires retailers to log, track and report these PSE product transactions. Logbooks must be retained for two years. Pharmitas, Inc., and Hand Held Products have partnered to offer solutions that enable retailers and pharmacists to comply with the CMEA by electronically capturing and managing PSE product transactions. Many retailers are using paper-based logbooks to manually record consumers’ driver’s license information, purchase details and signatures. But a paper system creates challenges for everyone involved. It’s time-consuming for consumers, presents risks to retailers if logs are not secure and accurate, and is difficult and time-consuming for law enforcement to monitor and identify illegal activity. The Pharmitas Pharmacy Solution allows retailers to replace their manual paper-based logbooks with its electronic data capture and management system. The Solution is driven by proprietary software developed by Pharmitas that can be used with the Hand Held Products Image Kiosk™ 8570 or the Dolphin® 7900 Mobile Computer. “Through our partnership with Pharmitas, retailers can fully comply with the CMEA mandate while serving more consumers faster. By eliminating cumbersome paper-based processes, pharmacists and retailers increase their productivity and save time,” said Garrison Gomez, Director, Mobility Systems Business Unit, Hand Held Products. Using either the mini-kiosk or mobile computer, retailers scan the 2D barcode or swipe the magnetic stripe on the consumers’ driver’s license to auto-populate their ID information into the log. Retailers then scan the PSE product’s UPC label, which automatically and instantly confirms if the consumer is within the legal purchase limit. The consumer verifies the sale with an electronic signature, and the transaction information is sent and stored to a secure database and server. “Hand Held Products’ innovative technology and expansive customer base will provide unprecedented access to the pharmacy channel for our software solutions,” said Chris Parsons, President and Chief Executive Officer at Pharmitas, Inc. “Given the potential growth opportunities, we expect this partnership to significantly expand our market share.” Powered by Adaptus® Imaging Technology 5.0, the IK8570 and Dolphin 7900 enable fast, omni-directional scanning of 1D and 2D barcodes. Plus, both have the option of an integrated magnetic stripe reader. The compact IK8570 has a small footprint ideal for the point-of-sale. The Dolphin 7900 is compact, ergonomic, wireless and rugged, providing ease of use and reliability. 3/30/2007 - Robert Hussey Receives Dilling Award
Hand Held Products Director of Imaging Technology Recognized for Outstanding Technological Contributions Skaneateles Falls, N.Y. – March 27, 2007 – Hand Held Products®, a leader in image-based data collection technology, today announced that Robert M. Hussey, Director of Imaging Technology, was awarded the Richard R. Dilling Award by AIM Global, the association for Automatic Identification and Mobility, for his efforts in applying advanced AIDC technologies to the healthcare environment. The Dilling Award, the highest award in the Automatic Identification and Data Capture industry, recognizes an individual’s outstanding contributions that have furthered industry growth through applications and technological developments. A noted innovator and industry veteran of 15 years, Hussey has received 35 U.S. patents, many for pioneering work in the development of image scanning technology and 2D barcodes. He developed a PDF417 reader, the industry’s second such device, and his work in the area of fast Reed-Solomon decoding led to the lowest-cost 2D reader, setting the stage for broad adoption across various vertical markets. As an active participant on the ANSI MH10 SC 8 and CEA R9 (formerly EIA) committees, Hussey helped define the industry’s first 2D barcode standards, which became the basis for application standards in material handling, electronics, automotive, telecommunications and the Department of Defense. More recently he has been a prominent leader in communicating and demonstrating the advantages of applying advanced AIDC technologies in healthcare. “Rob has been instrumental in educating the healthcare industry on the benefits of 2D barcodes for more accurate patient identification in an effort to reduce medication and administered care errors,” said Mike Ehrhart, Chief Technology Officer of Hand Held Products. “By coming up with an easier to read, more accurate and complete system for barcoding patient wristbands, Rob has empowered healthcare providers to enhance the quality of their patient services.” Hussey developed a new patient wristband design using 2D Aztec barcodes that are repeated around the circumference of the wrist. This format vastly improves readability by increasing reading distance five times over previous wristband designs and eliminates the need for caregivers to locate a single barcode on the wristband—they simply point and shoot without having to disturb the patient. “Rob’s vision and leadership in pioneering best practices for the use of barcode technology in healthcare—specifically at the crucial point-of-care—make him an outstanding recipient of the 2007 AIM Dilling Award,” said Dan Mullen, President, AIM Global. “This kind of commitment and innovation are instrumental in progressing the AIDC industry to provide more effective solutions and capabilities.” To further encourage the adoption of 2D barcodes in healthcare, Hussey has also taken his innovations to his peers outside of Hand Held Products, working with industry leaders, including Cerner Corporation, Zebra Technologies and Precision Dynamics, to provide source code and assistance in the implementation of Aztec Code into their products. 3/9/2007 - Children’s Medical Center Dallas Utilizes Mobile Computers with Point-of-Care System
Skaneateles Falls, N.Y. – February 26, 2007 – Hand Held Products®, a leader in image-based data collection systems for mobile applications, helps Children’s Medical Center Dallas provide greater patient safety through its Dolphin® 7900 Mobile Computers, which clinicians use at the point-of-care for verification of medication and patient identification via bar code scanning.
One of the nation’s largest pediatric healthcare providers, Children’s Medical Center Dallas serves approximately 300,000 children each year. Children’s provides care ranging from eye exams to specialized treatment in areas such as heart disease, hematology-oncology and cystic fibrosis. Children’s is also a major pediatric kidney, liver, intestine, heart and bone marrow transplant center.
In 2005, Children’s launched a large-scale mobile and wireless point-of-care solution. Joining a nationwide effort led by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, Children’s aimed to make advancements in the entire range of patient safety, including system design, product safety, safety of services, environment of care and utilizing proactive solutions.
The initial challenge was to build an application that supports specialized workflow and minimizes errors that could potentially lead to mistakes in medication administration. The Dolphin 7900s give Children’s the ability to access, document and transmit critical patient information in real time.
“Accuracy and safety are two things we are not willing to compromise when it comes to our patients, who are our number one priority,” says Debbie Schumann, RN, BSN, MBA, group manager, Children’s. “Scanning the barcodes helps ensure we are safely giving patients the right medications following the 5 Rights.”
Clinicians at Children’s use more than 250 mobile computers to scan bar codes on their employee ID badges and patients’ medication packets, and wristbands. Clinicians are alerted if they scan the wrong patient’s wristband or wrong dose of medication minimizing potential medication errors. This system ensures the “5 Rights” in patient safety are met: The right patient receives the right medication at the right time in the right dose via the right route.
“Nowhere else are data accuracy and ease of data acquisition more crucial than in the healthcare environment. Our goal is to provide medical staff with a solution that makes bar code scanning and data communication fast and easy, enabling them to provide the highest level of care and safety possible,” said Kevin Jost, CEO of Hand Held Products.
About Hand Held Products Hand Held Products is a worldwide leading manufacturer of image-based data collection systems for healthcare applications.
